There's Nothing Like a Sunrise Ride
If you ask any local cyclist what their favorite time to ride in Atlantic City is, the answer is almost always the same: sunrise. There's something magical about pedaling along the boardwalk as the sun comes up over the Atlantic Ocean — the golden light, the cool ocean breeze, the sound of waves, and the near-empty boardwalk all combine to create an unforgettable experience.
Why Sunrise Is the Best Time
The boardwalk is empty: During peak summer hours, the Atlantic City Boardwalk can get crowded with pedestrians, families, and tourists. At sunrise, you often have the entire boardwalk to yourself.
The temperature is perfect: Summer afternoons in Atlantic City can be hot and humid. Early morning rides offer cool, comfortable temperatures — often in the 60s and 70s even in August.
The light is incredible: The golden hour light at sunrise makes the ocean, the boardwalk, and the Atlantic City skyline look absolutely stunning. It's a photographer's dream.
The wind is calm: Coastal winds tend to pick up in the afternoon. Morning rides usually have calm or light winds, making for easier pedaling.
Best Sunrise Ride Routes
The Full Boardwalk: Start at the Inlet and ride south to Longport. By the time you reach Longport, the sun will be fully up and you'll have seen the entire Absecon Island coastline in golden light.
Gardner's Basin Loop: Start at Gardner's Basin for a shorter ride. The marina and inlet area are particularly beautiful at sunrise, with boats and water reflecting the golden light.
Brigantine Beach Path: Head over the bridge to Brigantine for a quiet sunrise ride along the beach path. The dunes and ocean views are spectacular in the morning light.
Tips for Sunrise Rides
- Check sunrise time: In summer, sunrise is as early as 5:30 AM. Plan to be on the boardwalk 30 minutes before for the best light.
- Bring lights: You'll likely start your ride in the dark, so front and rear lights are essential.
- Dress in layers: Morning temperatures can be 15-20 degrees cooler than afternoon highs.
- Bring a camera: You'll want to capture the sunrise — trust us.
- Plan a coffee stop: Several cafes along Atlantic Avenue open early. Plan a post-ride coffee as a reward.
Join a Sunrise Group Ride
The Sunrise Social Ride meets every Saturday morning on the boardwalk for a group sunrise ride. It's a great way to experience the magic of a sunrise ride with fellow cyclists.
