Atlantic City's Hidden Gem
While most cyclists flock to the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk, there's a lesser-known gem at the north end of the city that offers a completely different cycling experience. Gardner's Basin, a waterfront park and marina at the inlet, is a scenic destination that combines ocean views, maritime atmosphere, and a peaceful cycling loop into one delightful package.
What Is Gardner's Basin?
Gardner's Basin is a waterfront park located at the north end of Atlantic City, where the inlet meets the back bay. It features a marina with fishing boats, a waterfront promenade, restaurants, and open spaces with panoramic views of the Brigantine bridge, the inlet, and the Atlantic City skyline.
For cyclists, Gardner's Basin offers a scenic 1.5-mile loop that combines waterfront paths with views of the marina, inlet, and city. It's shorter than the main boardwalk ride but packs in more variety and photo opportunities.
The Route
Start: The Gardner's Basin parking area or the north end of the boardwalk
The loop: Ride the waterfront promenade around the basin, passing the marina, fishing pier, and open park areas. The path wraps around the inlet, offering views of the Brigantine bridge and the ocean beyond.
Connection: The loop connects directly to the north end of the Atlantic City Boardwalk, so you can extend your ride south along the boardwalk for as far as you like.
What Makes It Special
Marina views: The marina is home to fishing boats, charter boats, and pleasure craft. It's a working waterfront with authentic Jersey Shore character.
Inlet views: The inlet where the ocean meets the back bay is a dynamic, beautiful area with constantly changing water and light conditions.
Skyline backdrop: The Atlantic City skyline — including the casinos and hotels — provides a dramatic backdrop for the ride.
Bridge views: The Brigantine bridge is a striking structure that frames the northern view from the basin.
Restaurants: Several restaurants and bars at Gardner's Basin offer the perfect post-ride meal or drink with a waterfront view.
Best Time to Visit
Sunrise: The basin faces east, making sunrise the most spectacular time to ride. The golden light on the marina and inlet is breathtaking.
Sunset: While you won't see the sunset over the ocean (it sets in the west), the western sky behind the Atlantic City skyline can be stunning.
Off-season: In winter, Gardner's Basin is peaceful and quiet. The cold, clear air makes for excellent visibility and dramatic photos.
Combining with Other Routes
The Inlet Loop: Combine the Gardner's Basin loop with a ride along the inlet waterfront for a 2-mile loop that includes both the marina and the inlet.
Full boardwalk extension: Start at Gardner's Basin, ride the basin loop, then continue south on the boardwalk to Longport for a 13+ mile ride.
Brigantine connection: Cross the Brigantine bridge from Gardner's Basin and ride the Brigantine Beach path for a varied, scenic ride.
