Cycling with Kids on the Jersey Shore
The Atlantic City Boardwalk is one of the best places in New Jersey for family cycling. The flat surface, wide path, and abundance of attractions make it a perfect destination for a family bike adventure. Here's everything you need to know to have a safe and fun family cycling experience in Atlantic City.
Choosing the Right Setup
Toddlers and small children: Bike seats that attach to an adult's bike or bike trailers are great for kids who can't ride yet. Several rental shops along the boardwalk offer these options.
Young riders (ages 4-7): Tag-alongs (also called trail-a-bikes) attach to an adult's bike and let kids pedal along while being towed. Balance bikes are great for teaching very young riders on the boardwalk's flat surface.
Independent riders (ages 7+): Kids who can ride on their own will love having their own bike. Many rental shops offer kids' bikes in various sizes.
Family tandems and surreys: Multi-person surreys are available for rent on the boardwalk and are a fun family activity, though they're better for short distances than long rides.
Safety Tips for Family Rides
- Everyone wears a helmet: New Jersey law requires helmets for cyclists under 17, and it's good practice for the whole family.
- Ride single file: Keep kids in front of you where you can see them, and ride single file on the boardwalk.
- Choose off-peak times: Early mornings or evenings are best for family rides when the boardwalk is less crowded.
- Plan frequent stops: Kids get bored and tired faster than adults. Plan stops for snacks, drinks, and attractions.
- Set rules before riding: Make sure kids know to stop when you stop and not to ride ahead.
Best Family Ride Routes
Short and sweet: Start at Steel Pier and ride to Gardner's Basin (about 1 mile). This short ride has plenty to see and is perfect for young riders.
Medium adventure: Ride from Atlantic City to Ventnor (about 3 miles one way). Turn around when the kids get tired, or take a break at one of the Ventnor shops.
Full island experience: For older kids who can handle a longer ride, the full boardwalk from the Inlet to Longport is about 6 miles one way. Plan a long break in Margate at Lucy the Elephant.
Join a Family Cycling Group
The Downbeach Family Cyclers meet every Sunday morning for a family-friendly group ride. It's a great way to meet other cycling families and explore the shore together.
